WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Several local law enforcement agencies are giving drivers an added reminder to keep their eyes on the road.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Whatcom County is taking part in the state-wide campaign.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office will be making extra patrols to crack down on distracted drivers along with police in Bellingham, Ferndale and Lynden.
Washington’s Driving Under the Influence of Electronics (E-DUI) law prohibits drivers from holding cell phones while they’re driving, stopped in traffic or at a stop light. If you’re using a hands-free device for navigation, music or a phone call, you’re limited to a single touch or swipe.
Anyone who is caught violating the state’s E-DUI law could receive a $136 fine.
The Washington Traffic Safety Commission warns that eating, drinking or personal grooming can also count as distracted driving and are punishable by law.
