WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A man was killed following a pursuit that ended in south Whatcom County.

The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) says the Washington State Patrol attempted to pull over the man on a stolen motorcycle in Skagit County on the night of Saturday, May 17.

The 34-year-old suspect refused to stop and led law enforcement on a pursuit.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to help as the suspect exited NB I-5 near Lake Samish. The suspect led law enforcement into the Cain Lake neighborhood, abandoning the bike for a small boat.

He took the boat out onto the lake and began shooting in several directions as officers returned fire. The suspect was struck by a bullet and brought back to shore, where he died from his injuries.

No officers were hurt, and no nearby residences were struck by gunfire.

The Whatcom County Medical Examiner will formally determine the suspect’s cause of death.

SMART is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact investigators.
