WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Shellfish harvesting closures have been lifted for most of Whatcom County.
Health and Community Services says that an emergency biotoxin closure issued earlier this month for butter and varnish clams has been lifted. The reopening does not apply to beaches impacted by water pollution or areas near wastewater treatment plants.
Drayton Harbor and the waters surrounding Semiahmoo remain closed for harvesters due to a norovirus-type illness impacting shellfish. That closure will remain in effect until Jan. 27.
Harvesters are reminded to check for closures before they begin digging for clams and other shellfish.
