GLACIER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The remains of a snowmobiler who died near Glacier over the weekend have been recovered.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deb Slater says they received a report of an injured snowmobiler around 4:45 p.m. last Friday. According to the report, the snowmobiler had ridden into a tree well in a backcountry area off of Canyon Creek Road.

A search and rescue crew and snowmobile response team arrived at around midnight to take the unidentified male victim out of the tree well and pronounced them dead at the scene.

But the recovery effort was suspended due to the harsh terrain and darkness.

Crews were unable to return for the next three days due to poor weather and dangerous avalanche conditions.

A group of snowmobilers and a helicopter from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office recovered the remains on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 18 and transported them to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

My Bellingham Now has reached out to the Medical Examiner for identification of the deceased.
