FERNDALE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A public comment period is opening up ahead of a planned cleanup near Ferndale.

The Washington State Department of Ecology says that documents regarding the Treoil Industries cleanup site will be made available for public review beginning on Monday, March 24.

Located on Aldergrove Road, the Treoil site is a 3.5-acre section of property that was used for decades to produce paper products. Records dating back to the late 1980’s state that numerous spills and other hazards put the site on Ecology’s Contaminated Site List.

The Treoil site went through two cleanups in 2017 and 2022, which included the removal of nearly 200,000 gallons of oil. Ecology says that both cleanups cost over $4.3 million combined.

The property’s owners were fined $900,000 by Ecology in 2023 for not complying with state hazardous waste laws.

Public comment on Ecology’s proposed third cleanup effort will be available through April 22.
