Mariners News

The Mariners’ bats returned to form this afternoon to win their series against the White Sox. Recent addition Leody Taveras hit a go-ahead 2-run homer in the eighth to help Seattle beat Chicago 6-5. Cal Raleigh hit his American League-leading 16th home run of the season and Julio Rodriguez tacked on a 3-run shot in the win. The offensive explosion came a day after the team managed just four hits in a shutout loss to Chicago.

Logan Evans gave up four runs through six innings in today’s start, but Andres Munoz closed the Sox out with a shutout ninth to earn his league-leading 16th save of the year. Munoz still has yet to give up an earned run this season.

The M’s have won five of their last six heading into a key road series against their division rival Houston Astros. Coverage for tomorrow’s series opener starts at 4:00 on KPUG.

The Mariners just got some good news ahead of their series in Houston. Ace George Kirby is expected to start and make his season debut in tomorrow night’s game. Kirby has been on the injured list since March 24 with inflammation in his throwing elbow.

His return should help bolster a Mariners’ rotation that is also missing Logan Gilbert and Bryce Miller. Skipper Dan Wilson says he expects Kirby to throw 80 pitches at most tomorrow.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks have agreed to a deal with their potential quarterback of the future. The team signed rookie Jalen Milroe to a four-year contract today worth just over $6 million.

Seattle took Milroe with the 92nd pick in the draft last month. He brings the potential of a dual threat quarterback, having ran for over 700 yards and a school record 20-rushing touchdowns at Alabama last season.

ESPN’s Brady Henderson reports Milroe likely won’t challenge Sam Darnold for the starting job in Year 1, but the team may play him a few snaps per game to take advantage of his running ability.

NFL News

The tush push is still alive following a contentious meeting between NFL owners and league executives. ESPN reports a proposed ban of the tush push play popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles did not receive enough votes at a league meeting this morning.  The Green Bay Packers’ proposal is reported to have fallen just two votes short of passing. According to ESPN, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie criticized NFL commissioner Roger Goodell over advocating for the ban.

The play proved to be especially effective for Philly last season. The team scored a touchdown or converted a first down on 87% of their tush push attempts.

WWU Softball News

Western Washington University’s softball team is gearing up for its toughest test of the season. The Vikings are playing UT Tyler in Chattanooga, TN tomorrow morning for their first game of the College World Series. It’s a rematch of last year’s national championship series, where Western got swept.

The Vikings enter the game as the 8th seed, while UT Tyler owns the top overall seed among the eight remaining schools. But the Viks are no strangers to adversity after gutting out two must-win games in the Super Regional round last week.

First pitch for tomorrow’s game is at 11 am. You can stream the game live at NCAA.com.

Prep Soccer News

Sehome’s boys soccer team is beginning its state tournament run tonight. The 2nd-seeded Mariners are hosting 15th-seeded W. F. West in the opening round of 16.

Sehome’s looking to return to the 2A state title game, where they fell to Franklin Pierce in shootouts last year. The team still has yet to lose this season, entering tonight’s match with a 17-0-2 record.

The match gets underway at 5:00 from Civic Stadium.

Cold-water immersion may offer health benefits — and also presents risks

Claims about the benefits of cold-water immersion date back centuries.
