Seahawks News

The Seahawks are officially up for sale.

The estate of late team owner Paul Allen announced today that it’s begun the formal process of selling the team. It comes weeks after the Seahawks won their second Super Bowl in franchise history.

The estate says the sale is consistent with Allen’s directive to eventually sell his sports holdings, which also include the Portland Trail Blazers, and direct all estate proceeds to charity.

Allen was critical in keeping the Seahawks in Seattle, which is where the team is expected to remain after the sale is finalized. Many reports suggest the sale is expected to set a new record for the price of a sports franchise.

The news came as the Seahawks introduced a new member of their coaching staff.

ESPN reported earlier today that the team has hired Northern Illinois University head coach Thomas Hammock as their new running backs coach and senior offensive assistant. He’s expected to become the NFL’s highest paid running backs coach.

Meanwhile, the Huskies are searching for a new offensive coordinator. Jimmie Dougherty announced today that he’s stepping down as OC at Washington.

It came just over a year after he was promoted to the position after spending two seasons as quarterbacks coach. While Dougherty did not call plays, his departure means coach Jedd Fisch will be searching for his third offensive coordinator in three seasons at UW.

Winter Olympics News

The United States’ men’s hockey team is heading to the Olympics semifinals.

The US edged Sweden 2-1 in overtime this afternoon to continue its undefeated run in Milan. Team USA led for nearly the entire match, but Sweden scored with less than 2 minutes left in regulation to force overtime.

Quinn Hughes went on to score the game-winner to send the US into a semifinals matchup against Slovakia on Friday. The winner of that will play either Canada or Finland for the gold medal.

Meanwhile, the US women are facing off against Canada at 10:10 am tomorrow in the gold medal game. Seattle Torrent star and Team USA captain Hilary Knight has a chance to build on a special Olympics, as she announced her engagement to fellow Team USA member and speedskater Brittany Bowe earlier today.

She also has a chance to break the American scoring record, as she’s currently tied for the most ever with 14 career Olympic goals.

HS Basketball News

Four more Whatcom County teams have booked their ticket to the state tournament. The Lynden Christian boys and girls and Lummi Nation boys and girls are all headed to the big dance after earning wins last night.

The Lynden Christian girls beat Nooksack Valley 58-27 to win the 1A district championship. The Pioneers will now play the winner of Meridian and Mount Baker in a winner-to-state game on Saturday.

The LC boys followed with a 76-58 win over Nooksack in their own district title game. The Pioneers boys will now play the winner of Meridian and Blaine in another winner-to-state game on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Lummi boys and girls each tipped off their tri-district tournaments with a win. The Blackhawks girls started it off by thumping Concrete 71-23.

After that, the Lummi boys topped Northwest Yeshiva 81-34. Senior guard Jerome Toby hit another major milestone by setting a school record for career points. He passed Sarah Tom’s previous record of 2,156 as he continues the push to end his historic career with another state title.

Both Lummi teams now advance to the tri-district semifinals, where they’ll play at a neutral site tomorrow for a spot in the championship. They’ve each already clinched a spot at state with last night’s wins.

Coming up tonight, the Squalicum girls are playing to extend their season when they face Anacortes in the 2A district consolation finale. If the Storm win, they’ll face a TBD team from the Central Washington region in the district crossover with a chance to clinch their first state tournament appearance in over a decade.

Tipoff for tonight’s game against Anacortes is at 4:45 from Mount Vernon High School.

After that, the Ferndale girls are taking on Shorecrest in the 3A district consolation bracket. The Golden Eagles need to win this game and one more to book a spot in the state tournament, but any loss will end their season.

They tip off at 7:00 from Shorecrest High School.
