The Mariners are back in West Sacramento tonight as they look to close in on the division lead.

Seattle’s coming off a 3-1 win over the Athletics in their series opener last night, led by seven stellar innings of one-run ball from Luis Castillo. Josh Naylor added his first home run as a Mariner with a solo shot in the second. Rookie Ben Williamson put on a clinic at third base with three highlight plays and a pair of hits in the win.

With the Astros losing their fifth straight game last night, the Mariners have pulled to three games back of first place in the AL West. They’ll look to keep up the pressure with Logan Evans on the mound tonight in Game 2 against the A’s.

Bells News

The Bells’ offense showed out again in their series opener against the Kelowna Falcons last night. Bellingham blew out Kelowna 11-1 behind 14 team hits.

Shortstop Aiden Aguayo led the effort from the leadoff spot with three hits, three runs and four RBI. Catcher Andrew Lamb added four hits and three RBI in the win. Carter Herrera backed them on the mound with just one run allowed through four innings in the start.

The Bells have now racked up 48 runs over their past four games. They’ll look to keep it going tonight in Game 2 against the Falcons.

First pitch is at 6:35 from Joe Martin Field and make sure to get there early, because the first 900 fans will receive a special bucket hat.

The Storm thumped the Connecticut Sun 101-85 last night. Skylar Diggins had another triple double and Nneka Ogwumike led all scorers with 26 points in the win.

Diggins’ triple double came days after she put up the first one in WNBA All-Star Game history.

Seattle shot nearly 87% from the field in the third quarter, which set a franchise record for any quarter.

The Storm have alternated wins and losses for eight straight games going back to July 6. They have three days off before returning home to face the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday.

A gunman who killed four people inside a Manhattan office tower yesterday blamed his mental health problems on the National Football League.

Investigators say the man, identified as a 27-year-old casino worker from Las Vegas, intended to target the league’s headquarters upstairs but took the wrong elevator. He was carrying a handwritten note in his wallet claiming that he suffered from CTE and accused the league of hiding the dangers of brain injuries linked to contact sports for profit.

The NFL long denied the link between football and CTE, but it acknowledged the connection in 2016 testimony before Congress and has paid more than $1.4 billion to retired players to settle concussion-related claims.

Ryne Sandberg, a Hall of Fame second baseman who became one of baseball’s best all-around players while starring for the Chicago Cubs, has died at the age of 65. Sandberg announced in January 2024 that he had been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer.

He was born and raised in Spokane, Washington, before being selected out of high school by Philadelphia in the 20th round of the 1978 amateur draft.

Sandberg was inducted into the Hall of Fame on his third try on the ballot in 2005. The Cubs retired his No. 23 that same year.
