Mariners News

The Mariners fumbled an early lead and lost to the Yankees 3-2 this afternoon.

Julio Rodriguez hit a 2-run double in the third inning to start Seattle off strong. Luis Castillo gave up just one run through six innings in the start. But Paul Goldschmidt and Aaron Judge each hit solo homers off the Mariners relievers to give the Yankees a win in the series rubber match. Randy Arozarena was hit by a pitch to extend his on-base streak to 35 games.

The Mariners have now lost five of their last six matches, but still hold a one-game lead over the Athletics for first place in the AL West. The M’s have the day off tomorrow before hitting the road for a weekend series against the San Diego Padres.

Another starting pitcher for the Mariners is hitting the injured list. The club placed Bryce Miller on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation ahead of today’s game against the Yankees. Miller has faced early-season struggles, going 2-4 with a 5.22 ERA in eight starts. The 26-year-old says he’s been dealing with right elbow issues since the end of last season, and especially since making his first start in 2025.

He now joins fellow starters Logan Gilbert and George Kirby on the IL. Kirby is expected to make his first start of the season next week, while Gilbert just threw his first bullpen session since getting injured late last month.

Sehome’s boys soccer team is headed to the state tournament. The Mariners edged Squalicum 1-0 in penalty kicks last night to win the 2A district championship and continue their undefeated season. The Storm now fall to the consolation bracket, where they’ll face the winner of Lynden vs Archbishop Murphy on Saturday for a second chance to go to state. Meanwhile, Blaine and Lynden Christian are facing off at 7:00 tonight in the 1A district title game.

In postseason baseball, Bellingham is playing Anacortes for the 2A district championship tomorrow. Winner goes to the state tournament and the loser faces the winner of Sehome vs. Archbishop Murphy on Saturday for a second stab at state. First pitch is at 6:00 from Daniels Field in Anacortes.

And districts are just getting underway in fastpitch softball. Lynden Christian won its opening game this afternoon to advance to the 1A semifinals. Nooksack Valley and Mount Baker each split their pair of games to fall into the consolation bracket. In 2A, Sehome and Squalicum are each playing their opening-round games right now with a chance to face each other in the district semis later tonight, while Lynden awaits the winner of Anacortes and Lakewood on the other side of the bracket.

One of Whatcom County’s top hoopers is going D-I. Meridian High School senior Talon Jenkins announced that he’s committed to the University of Idaho. Jenkins helped lead the Trojans to a 4th place finish at the state basketball tournament this past season. His teammate and All-Tournament guard Jaeger Fyfe is headed to Skagit Valley College.
