Seahawks News

The Seahawks added a flurry of notable players today to bolster their depth.

Seattle signed running back Cam Akers to its active roster after third-stringer George Holani left last game with a hamstring injury. Akers will join the Hawks just in time for a reunion with his most recent team, the Minnesota Vikings, who released him just last weekend.

Speaking of reunions, the team officially signed safety Quandre Diggs to its practice squad following rumors that the former Pro Bowler could return to Seattle.

Former Husky standout running back Myles Gaskins also returned to their practice squad after being cut last week.

Meanwhile, a former Seahawks head coach has found a new home.

Colorado State announced today that it’s hired Jim Mora as its next head coach.

Mora was a defensive back and linebacker at UW in the early 1980s before spending three seasons as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and one with the Seahawks in 2009.

He’ll look to lead the CSU Rams in their first season in the newly-rebuilt Pac-12 next year.

Whatcom County’s prep football coaches have spoken and the Northwest Conference has announced its regular season All-Conference teams.

In Class 2A, the coaches voted Sehome senior quarterback Nolan Wright as the conference’s Offensive MVP and Lynden junior linebacker Malachi Koenen as Defensive MVP. The Mariners led the way with seven First Team All-Conference selections, with Lynden and Squalicum right behind with four apiece.

Over in Class 1A, Mount Baker senior running back Brice Cooper won Offensive MVP and Lynden Christian junior linebacker Kaden Veldman took home Defensive MVP. The Mountaineers and Lyncs each led the county with 11 All-Conference selections.

Baker head coach Ron Lepper also earned Coach of the Year. You can view the full teams at WhatcomPreps.com.

Fittingly enough, Mount Baker and Lynden Christian are the only two teams left standing in the state football playoffs this weekend.

The 3rd-seeded Mountaineers are traveling to Wenatchee on Saturday to face 2nd-seeded Cashmere in a semifinal matchup that will send the winner to Husky Stadium for the 1A state championship. Coverage begins at 2:40 and kickoff is at 3:00 on KGMI with Dan Kaemingk and Rick Todd on the call.

On the other side of the bracket, the 4th-seeded Lyncs are headed to Royal High School to face the top-seeded Knights. Royal has won eight of the last nine state championships and is currently riding a 46-game win streak, with their last loss coming to Lynden Christian in September 2022.

They’ll also kick off at 3:00 on Saturday.
