Northwest Sports Update: Kraken snap skid, Seahawks gear up for Rivers’ return, turmoil at Michigan football and more

The Kraken have finally snapped their longest skid of the season.

Seattle beat the LA Kings 3-2 in overtime last night to end their six-game losing streak.

Vince Dunn scored the game-winner on a power play just over a minute into extra time. Jared McCann and Matty Beniers also scored for the Kraken in their return to the win column.

They’ll now hit the road for a brief single-game road trip in their first-ever match against Utah under their new name “The Mammoths.”

College Football News

Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore is expected to make his first court appearance tomorrow.

Moore was arrested in Saline, Michigan yesterday, hours after the school announced that it fired him for having an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

Police have only said that they’re investigating an alleged assault. No criminal charges have been filed yet, as the case remains under investigation.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks are gearing up for an unprecedented matchup this weekend.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen says he’s still not sure if Philip Rivers will play in Seattle on Sunday, but expects a decision to be made by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Rivers has a “real chance” to make the start. Rivers officially signed to the Colts’ practice squad yesterday, days after he turned 44. The 8x Pro Bowler hasn’t played in the NFL the 2020 season, after which he retired.

His former teammate and Seahawks edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu says he’s expecting Rivers to play on Sunday.

Week 15 of the NFL season kicks off tonight when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night football.

The Bucs are looking to get a leg up in the race for the NFC West, as they’re currently tied with the Panthers for first place. But they’ve slowed down from their hot 5-1 start to the season, having lost four of their last five.

Meanwhile, the Falcons will try to shake off last week’s blowout loss to the Seahawks for tonight’s divisional matchup.

One of Western’s girls soccer players has been named among the best in the country.

Senior forward Morgan Manalili has been selected as a First Team All-American. It caps off a stellar season that saw her earn GNAC Player of the Year and West Region Player of the Year.

Her 17 goals during this past season tied a conference single-season record and were the most by a Viking since 1995.

The Blaine boys edged Bellingham 72-67.

The Bayhawk girls got revenge with a 31-24 win over the Borderites.

The Mount Baker girls beat Friday Harbor 53-23.

And the Baker boys followed with a 63-38 win over Friday Harbor.
