HS Football News

It’s officially postseason time for high school football and seven Whatcom County schools will compete for a chance to make the state tournament this coming weekend.

Lummi Nation will open the slate by hosting Ocosta at 5 pm on Friday. After that, Lynden hosts Bremerton at 6:00 at Ferndale High School. The Golden Eagles will be across the state facing Cheney at Eastern Washington University, also at 6:00.

On Saturday, Lynden Christian opens the day by hosting Naches Valley at noon at Blaine High School. Sehome takes the field next against Selah at 2:00 at Civic Field. Mount Baker hosts Wapato at Blaine High School at 3:00.

Nooksack Valley caps off the weekend by hosting King’s at 6:00 at Civic Field. There, the Pioneers will look for redemption after suffering a tight loss at King’s earlier in the season.

This is the second year of the newly-established Week 10 play-in round, so each team will need to win in order to make the state tournament.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks picked up an impressive win in the nation’s capital last night.

Seattle thumped the Washington Commanders 38-14 to win their ninth straight road game. Sam Darnold completed his first 17 passes on the way to a career night, finishing with 330 yards and four touchdowns. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 129 receiving yards to maintain his place atop the league. Rookie Tory Horton added a pair of scores in the win.

The Commanders lost their second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels after he dislocated the elbow in his non-throwing arm in the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks now own a 6-2 record and remain tied with the LA Rams for first place in the NFC West.

Meanwhile, 12’s fans can get an early preview of their next opponent tonight when the Arizona Cardinals face the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. Coverage begins at 4:00 and kickoff is at 5:15 on KPUG.

The Seahawks will host the Cards next Sunday with a chance to pick up their fourth straight win.

Huskies/Cougs News

The Cougs couldn’t prevail in the battle of the two remaining Pac-12 teams.

Washington State fell to Oregon State 10-7 on Saturday after the Beavers scored a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Cougs now fall to 4-5 on the season after dropping their third game in four weeks.

The Huskies had a bye week but still managed to make their first appearance in the national rankings this season. Washington came in at #24 in the latest AP poll ahead of this week’s road matchup against Wisconsin.

Kraken News

The Kraken continue their homestand tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Seattle’s looking to avoid its third straight loss after falling to the New York Rangers 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. Chandler Stephenson had a goal and an assist, but it wasn’t enough as the Kraken lost in extra time for the second straight match.

Over half of their games this season have gone to overtime or shootouts.

They’ll look to rebound tonight against a Blackhawks squad that’s also coming off an overtime loss. Coverage begins at 6:30 and puck drops at 7 on KGMI.

Sounders/Reign News

The Sounders are back in Seattle tonight as they look to keep their season alive.

They’re hosting Minnesota United in the second match of their best-of-three opening round playoff series. The Sounders fell in shootouts last week and need a win to force a decisive Game 3 in Minnesota.

Tonight’s Game 2 starts at 7:45 from Lumen Field.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Reign are playoff-bound.

They played the Orlando Pride to a scoreless draw yesterday to lock up the fifth-seed. A win would have moved the Reign up to the three seed, but instead, they’ll stay in Orlando to face the fourth-seeded Pride this week in the opening round of the playoffs.

The single-elimination match will take place at 5 pm on Friday.

MLB News

The Dodgers are once again World Series champs.

LA bested the Toronto Blue Jays in an 11-inning classic on Saturday to become the first team to repeat since the Yankees’ three-peat 25 years ago. Will Smith’s second home run of the game proved to be the difference, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto won MVP after throwing nearly three shutout innings the day after he threw six in his Game 6 start.
