The Mariners rallied to secure their ninth straight series win with a little help from an old rival. Seattle came back from a five-run deficit to beat the Athletics 6-5 this afternoon in the final game of their series in Sacramento.
The M’s trailed by five runs entering the fifth inning, but Ben Williamson hit an RBI double and Rowdy Tellez hit a 3-run homer the next inning to pull them within one. Leody Taveras went on to drive home the tying run in the eighth inning then scored the winning run on a double from Dylan Moore. It came just a day after the Mariners claimed Taveras off waivers from their division rival Texas Rangers.
Moore had two hits in his return from the injured list and JP Crawford picked up a single to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. Bryan Woo had a rough outing with five runs allowed through six innings, but Andres Munoz closed the game out to earn his 13th save of the season.
The Mariners have won eight of their last 10 and now hold a three game lead over the A’s for first place in the AL West. They have the day off tomorrow before returning home to host the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday with a chance to win their 10th straight series this weekend.

One of the NFL’s top young receivers is on the move. The Pittsburgh Steelers traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys this morning in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick. The Cowboys will also send a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Steelers and get a sixth-rounder back.
Pickens is entering the final year of his rookie contract after racking up over 2,800 receiving yards over his first three seasons.
The trade leaves Pittsburgh’s wide receiver room open for DK Metcalf to get more targets. Metcalf signed a five-year, $150 million extension with the Steelers earlier this offseason after the Seahawks flipped him for a second-round pick.

The NHL’s newest expansion team has finally landed on a name. Utah announced today that it will call itself the Utah Mammoth after going by the Utah Hockey Club for its inaugural season. The name came from multiple rounds of voting from fans that saw more than 850,000 ballots cast.
It was inspired by herds of mammoths having claimed what would become Utah as their home more than 10,000 years ago. Fossils have been found throughout the state and a complete mammoth skeleton was discovered in 1988.
According to the team, it chose a singular “Mammoth” rather than the plural “Mammoths” because “it symbolizes one team, all-in and all of Utah.”

Western Washington University’s softball team begins its journey back to the College World Series tomorrow. The 4th-seeded Vikings are playing 5th-seeded Concordia Irvine in Hayward, CA in the first round of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The 9th nationally ranked Viks enter the match riding a 13-game win streak.
The two teams did not play during the regular season, but Concordia went 5-0 against GNAC teams.

Speaking of the playoffs, district tournaments are just getting underway for high school baseball in Whatcom County.
Ferndale had its season come to an end yesterday in a 3-0 opening round loss to Shorecrest. Squalicum blanked Marysville-Pilchuck 6-0 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Nooksack Valley is currently battling South Whidbey in a loser-out match.
Coming up tomorrow, Bellingham plays Lynden, Sehome faces Archbishop Murphy and Squalicum takes on top-seeded Anacortes in the 2A district quarterfinals.
