WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A fundraiser created in light of a tragic bike accident had a big turnout over the weekend.

Owen’s Day in the Dirt raised about $14,000 during the memorial ride for Owen Morton at Hannegan Speedway on Aug. 18.

Owen’s father, Ben Morton, opened the foundation to help the community he says was so gracious after his 14-year-old son’s passing in May.

The donations will go towards a stash of gear for Owen’s Locker at local tracks in the region.

The gear will be available for the public to check out for the day, week or season.

Ben Morton says motocross is an expensive sport, and the new equipment will help riders keep their safety gear up to date.

He plans to make the fundraiser an annual event at the Speedway to give back to the community.

Morton adds that there are also plans to go national with Owen’s foundation and expand it to help support people with medical bills from injuries.
