LYNDEN, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Minimal damage was reported after a small fire sparked at a local museum over the weekend.

Lynden Fire Lt. Chad Baar tells My Bellingham Now that the fire broke out at the Lynden Heritage Museum sometime between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7.

A paper shredder had malfunctioned and caused a small fire in an office room on the east side of the building.

The building’s sprinkler system didn’t go off, but the fire detection system helped alert first responders. Baar says the operation to put it out took about 20 minutes.

The fire was contained to the single office room, but the museum says smoke and soot spread throughout the entire building.

The fire left minimal damage to office equipment and a desk in the room, estimated at roughly $3,000.

The museum is closed until Wednesday as the cleanup of the office space and parts of the library will continue throughout the week.

The Lynden Chamber of Commerce says the community can help with the cost of the cleanup by giving a donation via the museum’s website.
