BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Northbound I-5 south of Bellingham remains closed without any estimated timeline for reopening.

In its latest update, WSDOT says crews continued to make progress over the weekend and dislodged the final loose rock in the middle of the slope.

They’ve now started to to haul debris so experts can begin to assess the bottom of the slide area.

Crews also made a big bit of progress last week when they split the largest “bus-sized” rock into two pieces.

It’s been nearly three weeks since a landslide closed northbound I-5 between North Lake Samish and Old Fairhaven Parkway.

WSDOT continues to remind freight traffic to take Highway 9 around the closure.

Other detour routes on Chuckanut Drive and Samish Way are not designed for semi-trucks.

It’s also urging drivers to zipper merge when approaching the lane closures at North Lake Samish, using the advice “merge late and cooperate.”
