BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Bellingham is continuing to add land to its preservation of Lake Whatcom’s watershed.

Over two months, the City of Bellingham has added nearly 100 acres of land to its Lake Whatcom Watershed Land Acquisition and Preservation Program. That includes the purchases of two properties totaling 45 acres that the city council approved on May 19.

The purchases total $1.1 million in funds that come from watershed fees on utility bills.

Those purchases follow two more in April and May that total nearly $800,000.

Public Works spokesperson Stefanie Cilinceon says that the purchases help preserve water quality as the forested land around the lake is protected from development.
