WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A winter storm on the horizon could cause power outages in Whatcom County and impact your holiday travel plans.

The National Weather Service in Seattle (NWS) says a very active weather pattern is moving through the Pacific Northwest over the next few days. It’s issued a winter storm watch from Wednesday afternoon through Friday morning for elevations above 3,500 ft, including the Mount Baker Ski Area.

Forecasters say we could see between 18 to 24 inches of snow over that time and wind gusts could reach 55 mph. Residents are being advised to consider delaying all travel over mountain passes and to drive with extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

NWS also issued a high wind watch in western Whatcom and Skagit counties, which is in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon. Southeast winds could reach 40 mph Wednesday afternoon into Thursday and 55 mph later on Thursday.

The powerful winds could blow down trees and power lines, making widespread power outages a possibility.

Cold-water immersion may offer health benefits — and also presents risks

Claims about the benefits of cold-water immersion date back centuries.
