A college student apparently unaware of Kurt Cobain’s 1994 death sent a letter to Sub Pop, Nirvana’s one-time record label, asking if the band would be so kind as to record a Homecoming Week message for her school.

Nirvana broke up after Cobain’s suicide nearly two decades ago.

In the letter that’s gone viral on the web, the student identifies herself as Virginia Tech’s mascot and a candidate for homecoming queen. The message, she believes would improve her chances of winning.

The student refers to Nirvana as “her,” the unnamed student assures the band that a video would be beneficial to all involved.

“It presents great publicity for them, and as Virginia Tech loves Nirvana, we’d love to have her in our video,” she writes. “They would be one among artists including Big N Rich, Ying Yang Twins, the Cataracs, Slightly Stoopid, and three famous NFL Players.”

She even recommends the following message: “What’s up Virginia Tech? This is Nirvana! Just wanted to wish you guys a Happy Homecoming Week and good luck at the game this Saturday. LETS GO HOKIES!”

It’s not clear yet whether or not the letter is a joke.

Sub Pop Tweeted in response: “This person could just be pulling an elaborate ruse on us — the joke tables could very well turn.”

The label obliged and created a video for the student anyway.
