NORTH POLE – Using radar, satellites, cameras and a little bit of magic, more than 1,300 volunteers will man the phones and keep tabs on the whereabouts of Santa and provide live updates through Christmas Eve.

For more than 50 years, NORAD – the North American Aerospace Defense Command – has been tracking the world-famous jolly elf in addition to its everyday responsibility monitoring the North American airspace.

The Santa tracking tradition started in 1955, after Sears Roebuck & Co ran a Christmas advertisement in a newspaper accidentally misprinting Santa’s North Pole phone number with the contact number of a high-level office at NORAD.

How to track Santa right up until bedtime on Christmas Eve:

NORAD online: Check in on Santa as he travels around the world and learn more about the technology used to track Santa, listen to Christmas tunes, or play a game on the official NORAD Santa Tracker website.

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: NORAD Santa Tracker iTunes app

Android: Download the Santa Tracker for Android in Google Play.

OnStar: If you have an OnStar equipped vehicle, you can push the blue OnStar button from 7 a.m. on Dec. 24 until 5 a.m. on Dec. 25 to get an update on the whereabouts of Santa.

Social media: You can also check in with NORAD via Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Via phone: Live NORAD Santa trackers will man the phones starting at 4 a.m. MST Christmas Eve and can provide a live update. Call 1-877-HI-NORAD.
