Sony unveils cassette that holds 64M songs – yes, a cassette

The golden era of the cassette tape has long since passed, being cast aside for newer technologies like CDs, and now, iPods and digital downloads.

Tapes have been experiencing a kind of cult resurgence in recent years, and, just as it did when it introduced the Walkman, Sony may have revolutionized the cassette yet again.

The company unveiled a new cassette tape capable of holding an average of 64.7 million songs – yes, million. Kind of makes your iPod look as obsolete as the Walkman, huh?

Sony debuted the tape this past weekend at the International Magnetics Conference.

According to Gizmodo, the tape can hold 3,700 Blu-Rays’ worth of material, or about 185 Terabytes of data.

The technology is most likely going to be used for commercial purposes like large-scale data backups and there is no word on when – or if – the tape will be marketed for home users.

But, it’s fun to reminisce about the days when going for a jog meant a cassette and a Walkman.
