BURLINGTON, Wash. – Sakuma Brothers Farms in Skagit County says they will only hire domestic workers this year.

They had planned on bringing in foreign guest workers through a federal program, but have withdrawn their application.

Berry pickers went on strike several times last year demanding better pay and working conditions.

Rosalinda Guillen with Community to Community Development says it’s a step in the right direction.

She says it’s great to see that Sakuma Brothers plan to pay workers $11.87 an hour and has taken steps to provide better housing, security, and supervisor training.
