MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Baseball’s All-Star Game is being played this evening at Target Field in Minneapolis. The starting pitchers are Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals for the National League and Felix Hernandez of the Mariners for the American.

Hernandez, the first Venezuela pitcher to start for the All-Stars, is 11-2 with a 2.12 earned run average. He is just the second Seattle pitcher to start an All-Star game following Randy Johnson in 1995 and 1997. National League manager Mike Matheny of the Cardinals chose the ace of his own staff as Wainwright is 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA and three complete games in 19 starts. It will be the 11th All-Star start by a Cardinals pitcher.

Derek Jeter of the Yankees will be making his last appearance in an All-Star Game. The captain of the New York team is in his 14th All-Star game and is retiring at the end of the season.

The ceremonial first pitch will be tossed out by Rod Carew, an All-Star in all 12 of his seasons with the Minnesota Twins. Carew was an All-Star in the first 18 seasons of a 19-year big league career that started in 1967 and ended with the California Angels in 1985.

MLB-ALL-STAR GAME

Bonus money for players

Just how much is being an All-Star worth?

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Despite missing tonight’s All-Star game because of a sprained right wrist, just getting picked was rewarding for Kansas City outfielder Alex Gordon. He is among 47 of the 81 All-Stars who had bonus provisions in their contracts triggered by their selection for tonight’s game at Target Field.

In addition to the $50,000 bonus, Gordon will benefit from an escalator provision in his deal. By making the All-Star team, his 2015 salary and a 2016 player option rise by $500,000 each to $14 million.

Four players earned $100,000 All-Star bonuses: Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera (kah-BREHR’-uh), Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre (BEHL’-tray), Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler and Cleveland outfielder Michael Brantley.

NFL to keep the roof open for Super Bowl Sunday

The roof remained closed at University of Phoenix Stadium, where the NFL football's Super Bowl XLIX will be played, while the grass field remained outside in the sun, Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015, in Glendale, Ariz. At this point, the NFL says it plans to keep the retractable roof open at the stadium for the Feb. 1, 2015, NFL championship game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, but the plan can change as the league gets a better read on the weather forecast for game night.

It's a change of course at University of Phoenix Stadium, where the home team Cardinals have played with the roof closed for every game since December 2013.
